After reading Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, I decided my “summer classic” would be David Copperfield. Although the settings are quite different, Kingsolver often followed the gist of Dickens’ classic. Although I thought Demon Copperhead was a good read, I found David Copperfield a superior work. Both books are grim, but Copperfield has a sense of humor. While both have a cast of characters, Dickens’ tome has a more memorable, eccentric, well described cast. There is a reason that David Copperfield is one of the most beloved books in the world. It is humorous, exciting, and tragic with wonderful prose. It is a long, slow read, but when finished, one feels a sense of awe and accomplishment.
